LEE, Frederick Henry Norris. Lieutenant. 1st Battalion, Irish Guards. Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Pas-de-Calais, France. Tuesday 04-07-1916. Age 30. Born at Limerick, Ireland. Son of the Rev. John Theodore Norris Lee & Mary Lee of Hatfield Vicarage,Harlow Essex. Joined the Tembuland Mounted Rifles September 1914 & fought against the rebels in the Orange Free State. Transferred 1915 to the Kalahari Horse & served in the German East African campaign." He entered the Cape Colony Civil Service at the age of 16 in 1902 and was acting assistant magistrate at Umbato when the war broke out. This trek ended at Windhoek extending all together 1,500 miles. At the close of the campaign in German South-West Africa the Civil authorities extended his leave to enable him to return to service near home. He was commissioned last October to the Special Reserve, Irish Guards. He was reported to be "a keen and promising officer," and as a civilian had been an ardent Volunteer." "On the 18th June officer patrols went out to look at the enemy's wire. 2nd Lt F.H.N Lee was wounded in the leg while close to it & was carried back, dying later of gangrene."

At the outbreak of warhe was in the Argentine & returned to the UK to enlist. Wounded in a bombing accident on 22-09-1915. After returning to active service,he was awarded an MC as follows :- “For conspicuous gallantry. When on patrol with two men he discovered a strong enemy patrol, who evidently intended to rush an isolated post. With great determination he dispersed the enemy patrol with one of his men, after sending the other for reinforcements. His promptness in all probability saved the post.” Stone Inscription :- "Lord All Pitying, Jesu Blest Grant Him Thine Eternal Rest".
