On the outbreak of war, he enlisted with the 11th Hussars, transferred to he Royal Scots Greys, was gazetted to the 3rd Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment April 15th 1915, transferred to 2nd Battalion in August 1915 7& was hen transferred in January 1916, to the Machine Gun Corps.
