Friday 27-09-1918. Age 23. Son of John & Mary Alice (nee Fletcher) Murgatroyd of "Westerland", Watling Street, Bexleyheath, Kent, UK. Enlisted September 1914. Born at Christchurch, New Zealand in 1895. He had previously served at Galipolli & Egypt. Also remembered on the Bexleyheath War Memorial. Stone Inscription :- "He Hath Given Us His Life Greater Love Hath No Man".

The citatiob for his MC appeared in the London Gazette of 23rd July 1918. “Lieutenant Hugh Lester Murgatroyd, Leicester Regiment, For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in commanding his company with great dash and determination and beating off several attacks by the enemy. Later, he led his company with great coolness through a heavy barrage to reinforce a unit heavily engaged in front. He displayed gallantry and fine power of command.”
