Enlisted 22-09-1914, arrived in France 08-10-1915. Killed by shrapnell. His eldest brother Second Lieutenant Alfred Richard Barton of 3rd South African Infantry Regiment was killed during hand to hand fighting in Delville Wood on or bout 18-07-1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.
Both brothers are remembered on the War Memorial at St. Peter's Church, Strumshaw, Norfolk.
