MAXWELL, (DSO.MC). John. Lieutenant Colonel. King's Royal Rifle Corps, On Attachment From :- 7th (Service) Battalion, Rifle Brigade. Ypres Rservoir Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Tuesday 04-12-1917. Age 36. Eldest son of Alice Maxwell of Brock Street, Bath, UK. & the late John Maxwell. Native of Richmond, Surrey, UK. Born 01-08-1881. Lt Col Maxwell enlisted on the outbreak of war in 1914 and was posted to the Western Front in May 1915 where he commanded C Company. He served at Ypres and fought in the Battle of the Somme,where at one point he was the only officer of three companies to remain unwounded. Following the Somme, he also saw action at Arras and then again in the Ypres Salient. Lt Col Maxwell was killed by a shell, aged 36, on 4 December 1917 and is buried at Ypres Reservoir Cemetery. He was awarded a posthumous Military Cross. Stone Inscription :- "Soldier, Rest Thy Warfare O'er".
