The 3rd (Prince of Wales's) Dragoon Guards was a cavalry regiment in the British Army, first raised in 1685 as the Earl of Plymouth's Regiment of Horse. It was renamed as the 3rd Regiment of Dragoon Guards in 1751 and the 3rd (Prince of Wales's) Dragoon Guards in 1765. It saw service for two centuries, including the First World War, before being amalgamated into the 3rd/6th Dragoon Guards in 1922.

Percival Naylor Kent was the youngest son of Jackson Goodenough Kent and Frances Pears, born in 1870 Kingston, Surrey. His father died when Percival was only 4 years old. When he was 10 years of age he was living with his widowed mother and his siblings at Grove Road, Elm Bank, Kingston, Surrey. 1896 married to Australian born Susan Katherine Tooth. The couple had 3 children. He probably started his military career in the early 1890’s as the London Gazette announced his promotion from 2nd Lieutenant to Lieutenant in 1894. Dated 28th June 1900 he was to be Aide-de-Camp to Major General E P Leach, VC, CB, Royal Engineers, temporarily commanding the Troops, Belfast District. Also, the Gazette announced his rise to Captain in the Dragoon Guards in 1901 when he was staying in the Windsor Hotel, London with his wife.. He must have served on the Boer War as he was awarded 3 campaign medals whilst in the 1st Imperial Light Horse for that theatre of war. 1913 saw him as Captain with the Nottinghamshire (Sherwood Rangers) Yeomanry Territorial Force. Son of Charles Smith (merchant), of Ashley Lodge, Aberdeen. Born Aberdeen, 6 August 1883; educated Aberdeen Grammar School; matriculated in Agriculture, 1900. After spending a short time in the Agricultural Department he obtained a commission in the 3rd Dragoon Guards with whom he served in the South African War. On the conclusion of that war he served in the African Mounted Police. He rejoined the 3rd Dragoon Guards in September 1914 and proceeded to France in November of the same year.
